Debian was one of the more popular Linux distributions and was also one of the earliest distributions. Because of this, there are several other distributions that are based off of Debian, such as Ubuntu. Debian is made up of open-source software and is completely free. Most of this software is packaged by the Debian Project, which is just a group of individuals. Debian always has three different releases. These include unstable, testing, and stable. Normally users will use a stable release as it has been tested. Unstable eventually moves to the testing branch, which eventually moves into the stable branch after enough testing has been done.
